Description

Learn about the work of two leading transit agencies in the vanguard of policy development and implementation for connecting transit to pedestrian and bicycle networks.

Presenters from Translink (Vancouver, B.C.) and TriMet (Portland, Ore.) discuss their agencies’ approach to prioritizing connections for people walking and bicycling. TransLink’s research has drivcen a policy shift toward increased investment in bicycle and pedestrian facilities. A cost/benefit comparison led the transit agency to conclude that it should prioritize funding and implement improvements related to cycling and pedestrian networks and end-of-trip facilities--an investment strategy that will help TransLink meet mode-shift goals more quickly and at a lower cost. This presentation describes the background, analysis, and conclusions of TransLink’s research, and its plans for network improvements and supporting programs.

TriMet routinely includes enhanced connections to active transportation to help meet service, mode share and sustainability goals. Connections to active transportation are key components of two recent projects, the Tilikum Crossing transit bridge and the new Orange Line (light rail). Pedestrian crossing improvements address safety and equity and encourage transit-oriented development and multimodal transportation. Bike network improvements include connections to existing and planned routes, on-road improvements, safe crossings of rail lines, bike parking, and planning for future bikeshare stations. The presentation also describes TriMet’s walking audits and pedestrian network analysis whose goal is to prioritize improvements (sidewalk replacement) for pedestrian access to key transit nodes.
